Church History
The Anglican Church of the Holy Spirit (ACOTHS) faced several challenges in its early stages after being established on September 1, 2019. Initially, the church struggled with limited resources and a small congregation, with just eight adults and ten children attending the inaugural service. The church also encountered logistical difficulties and needed to establish a stable location for worship at 1214 Southern Blvd, Bronx, New York.
Despite these obstacles, the dedication and perseverance of the church leaders, including Rev. Canon David Nwanekpe (now The Venerable David Nwanekpe) and Rev. Clifford Erondu, played a crucial role in navigating these difficulties. Their commitment, along with the faith and support of the initial congregation, helped the church to overcome these early challenges and lay a strong foundation for future growth.
Today, ACOTHS stands as a testament to resilience and divine providence, emerging as one of the fastest-growing parishes of the Church of Nigeria in the New York area. The church’s journey from its humble beginnings to its current success reflects the unwavering faith and dedication of its members and leadership.
Significant support also came from Bishop Oti of the Anglican Diocese on the Lake and encouragement from The Venerable Dr. Sunday Iherue. Their guidance and assistance were instrumental in the church’s development during its formative years.
The Anglican Church of the Holy Spirit (ACOTHS) is proud to be part of the Church of Nigeria North America Mission (CONNAM). By joining CONNAM, we align ourselves with a broader commitment and vision of spreading the unadulterated Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout North America. As a vital part of this mission, our church actively contributes to promoting authentic faith, love, unity, and spiritual outreach within our local community, which is encapsulated in our slogan, “Love Lives Here.”
The Anglican Church of the Holy Spirit (ACOTHS) owes its foundation to the dedication and commitment of its founding members. These individuals played a crucial role in establishing the church and nurturing its early growth. The founding members include:
- The Ven. David Nwanekpe (Rector)
- Rev. Clifford Erondu (Assistant)
- Amuche Nwanekpe
- Chioma Erondu
- Dame Patience Okpara
- Rebecca Onoh
- Uchenna Nwanekpe
- Sister Norah Odu
- Sister Cordelia Okafor
In addition to these dedicated founding members, the church has had the support of various individuals who have since relocated or are no longer with our church family. Despite these changes, their contributions to the early stages of ACOTHS have left a lasting impact on our community. Two years after planting the church our Island Bronx and Westchester families joined this including the families of Anyaegbunam, Eze, Okeke, Onubugu, Uzo, Azubogu Onuoha, Onubugu, Abaraoha, Urhoghide, Onyeibe Ibeanusi Eneh, Ude and Samuel
